Helping with Homework and Study Skills

Homework Tips

  • Use your assignment book to record all of your work every day

  • Always ask questions in school so that you will understand the material and how to complete the homework assignment

  • Find your best time to work. Some students like to do homework right after school, and others need to relax first, or at least have a snack. Whatever you decide, make up a regular study schedule and stick to it!

  • Work in a well-lit, quiet spot. The kitchen table is good as long as it is quiet in the room. The floor or your bed is also good for doing some kinds of homework - just don't fall asleep!!

  • Turn off the TV and radio. It takes too much energy to concentrate while trying to tune out distracting noise

  • Work alone, unless reviewing with a friend by testing one another. Otherwise, you probably won't get much done

  • Start with your most difficult homework first, ordering all of your other assignments and chores. This way, if you get tired, the easier work is left for you to do

  • As you read your textbook/story, close your eyes once in a while and try to picture the information in your mind

  • Finish one assignment before starting another

  • Take short breaks between assignments

Improving Study Skills

  • Repetition - Make flash cards and review notes and terms frequently

  • Keyword Approach - Use imagination to find familiar words within words and attach images to new words

  • Auditory/Visual/Kinesthetic - Actively recite notes, rewrite notes, create a physical model, and practice, practice, practice!

  • Spaced Review - Spend time reviewing each day for short periods
