3/28/18 - Eat Smart New York Presentation
Students at Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary School recently began participating in monthly Eat Smart NY presentations offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension. Each month, the students are learning why it’s important to eat more fruits and vegetables, drink fewer sugary drinks and balance calories with physical activity. During the lessons, students also get to sample the Eat Smart NY Harvest of the Month food.
On March 27-29, students learned about and practiced making healthy food and beverage choices from all five food groups including fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. The students also watched a cooking demonstration and taste tested a carrot salad recipe featuring the March Harvest of the Month – carrots, along with lemon juice, curry, golden raisins and vegetable oil.
The Harvest of the Month program features specific local foods each month, highlighting the many ways that they can be prepared and served, as well as their nutritional benefits.
Both the Eat Smart New York lessons and the Harvest of the Month, are helping students to learn the elements of proper nutrition, meal planning and food preparation that will hopefully lead to life-long heathy eating habits.
