Students at Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary participated in a mini Relay for Life during their PE classes on June 10.

Throughout the entire school day, classes of students took turns walking laps around the outdoor track. As students completed each lap, they collected a bead to add to a necklace, giving them a fun way to keep track of how many laps they had each walked.

PE teachers Mrs. Carinci and Mr. Giambrone asked students to think about their family members and classmates who have been affected by cancer while participating in the Relay.

The school began holding the event several years ago in memory of 7 year old, West Frankfort Elementary student Cody Murdock, who passed away from cancer. In previous years, the Murdock family donated the supplies for the mini Relay for Life with Cody’s grandmother, Virgina, making each necklace by hand. This year, the event was hosted by Team Janice.

Missy Wohler from Team Janice, along with elementary secretary Roe Salvaggio and her sister Michelle Vivacqua, who are both cancer survivors, helped hand out necklaces and beads to the students during their laps.

Students and teachers at the elementary school also completed several fundraisers for the fight against cancer.

Prior to the mini Relay for Life, students sold paper signs in memory or in honor of friends and loved ones affected by cancer and then displayed the footprints on a bulletin board near the elementary school gym.

The Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District’s Relay for Life team – The Knights Who Remember – joined the fundraising efforts as well. The team raffled off computer tablets and themed gift baskets, and sold Luminarias to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Team Janice and the district’s own Relay for Life team “FS Knights Who Remember” will both participate in the Herkimer County Relay for Life held at Eastern Park in Little Falls on Saturday, June 15.
